A Dennis Township teenager had a rough day at the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee on Wednesday as she stumbled on two words during preliminary competition.
Stephanie Miller, 14, of the township's Clermont section, failed to spell the words "gauche" and "shrieval" at the spelling contest held in Washington, D.C., and she failed to advance to today's semifinal round.
Miller, who is heading to the Cape May County Technical High School in September, won the Millennium Radio ShopRite Tri-County Spelling Bee in March at Richard Stockton College, thus earning a chance to compete in Washington. The preliminary round began 8 a.m. Wednesday morning with 275 students, ranging in age from 8 to 15, from all 50 states as well as several other countries and U.S. territories.
Only 41 of the 275 contestants advanced to the semifinal round.
The preliminary round involves a point system with the students also taking a written spelling test. Each of the 25 words in the written test is worth one point while the two words spelled on stage were each worth three points.
The contest is being televised on ESPN 3 and can also be followed on the Internet at: www.espn.go.com/espn3/spellingbee
The finals begin 8:30 p.m. tonight. An awards dinner, a tour of the Capitol and a farewell party are scheduled for Friday.
